Garrucha
Garrucha itself is a beautiful and lively old
fishing town of just under 5000 inhabitants. It has a lively fishing
port as well as a yacht harbour. The fish landed include large red
prawns for which the town is famous. The fish are auctioned each day
at around 5pm and many are bought by the large number of restaurants which
form one side of the 2km long palm tree lined promenade with its famed white
marble balustrades. The restaurants and bars with their pavement
tables are the ideal place to people watch or be seen either during the day
or in the pleasant summer evenings. Garrucha has several buildings
of special interest including the parish church of San Joaquin and the
Hermitage de la Virgen del Carmen. There is a tower, built by the
founding fishermen in the 16th century to protect themselves from pirates,
which has been refurbished and houses a museum. Garrucha has it own blue
flag beach. The beach
extends over
8km passing Vera beach up to the quiet traditional village harbour of
Villaricos in the North and to the beach of Mojacar in the South.
There is a market on
Wednesdays and eight festivals throughout the year, including St John's
night, June 23rd, which has parties and bonfires on the beach.

Indalo Man
The indalo man is the sign for the area
and is a good luck sign. It is the shape of a man holding an arc between
outstretched arms. You will see it everywhere. The sign is believed to be
4,500 years old and from the Neolithic paintings in the caves at nearby
Velez Blanco. Velez Blanco also has a spectacular castle and is well
worth a visit.
